Read full description of the books Essays in Honour of Elias Canetti:Elias Canetti, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981, is one of the major intellectual figures of the twentieth century. He is, as Iris Murdoch has put it, "one of our great imaginers and solitary men of genius." Canetti's gifts are too wide-ranging to be limited to one genre. He has written a novel, Auto-da-Fe, which many consider on a par with the work of Musil and Broch; his work of social theory, Crowds and Power, is a revolutionary achievement, an entirely original way of rethinking history and mass psychology; the three volumes of his autobiography, The Tongue Set Free, The Torch in My Ear, and The Play of the Eyes, are themselves both literary masterpieces and noble attempts to account for the character of our times.
Essays in Honor of Elias Canetti was prepared by Canetti's German publishers to coincide with the great man's eightieth birthday. Appearing in English for the first time, the book is a comprehensive look at an author and a body of work. It ranges from essays on Canetti by such writers as Susan Sontag, Salman
Rushdie, and John Bayley to pieces on particular aspects of Canetti's work by noted German and Italian critics and scholars. As befits a Festschrift of this kind, the essays in the collection are themselves considerable achievements. The volume concludes with a fascinating overview of the way in which Canetti's novel Auto-da-Fe was received, when it was first published in the major European countries.
In their preface to this volume, the editors of Hanser Verlag, Canetti's German publishers, remark that Canetti's work can be read as "a lifelong attempt to understand and record the character of our era as shaped by two world wars." Canetti, intransigent and forever critical of power, is, indeed, one of the most lucid intellectual figures of our time. Essays in Honor of Elias Canetti is a welldeserved tribute to a man whose "exacting presence," as George Steiner has put it, "honors literature."
